Ideas to Improve Ranorex

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us at Ranorex Uservoice.

  1. Remote view of licence server status

We have a limited number of licenses running via a license server.

It would be useful if there was a way that we could check the license server status remotely via a webservice api or http server.

At present I need to remote onto the appropriate box then check the licence info and confirming that licences are free before launching a test run.

We’re happy to announce an early release of a license statistic tool. Please feel free to download the application and to provide us with feedback (pm@ranorex.com).

Note: The download package has been replaced by a new one as there were some files missing in the old package (2018-03-01 3:30 PM, CET.)

  2. Pause/Resume Current Testcase with Hotkey

Actual there is no way to pause a Testcase , only to Abort the current Testcase or the whole Solution.

We need this feature , because we use Ranorex as semi automatic Hardware testenviroment and we want to allow the users to pause a test, fix the hardware and then resume the current testcase.

Thank you for input. We are currently in the middle of developing this feature. There will be a hotkey for pausing and resuming the test execution of a test run. We need your help in evaluating and beta testing it, though. If you are interested in helping us by getting early access to this feature and by providing us feedback, please reach out to us using pm@ranorex.com.

  3. Improve databinding UI

The current way of how databinding and data connectors work is great. What is a little bit unhandy is how user sets and changes the binding. Currently you open a parameter and set to which module variable it will be bound (see binding_direction.png). What would be better is the ability to open the binding dialog for given module and set what paramater will be bound to what module variable (see dialog.png).
It wouldn't change anything inside the binding mechanism. The only thing needed is the enhanced UI. In fact, all the information are stored in the *.rxtst file and if…

    Thank you for your input.

We have started working on a data-binding UI overhaul. The sum of changes that we plan will probably come in the next two versions of Ranorex (so not everything will already be in 9.2), and we hope to create a much better user experience when working with external data sources.

If you are interested in having “early access” to these new changes, please register for our Beta Program. There you can give us valuable feedback for further improvements in this feature: https://www.ranorex.com/beta-program/

  4. Validation should have Timeout property.

I see in Ranorex Studio it has Duration property but it is not the same as Timeout.
Validate with a Duration set to 30 seconds will consume 30 seconds even when validation condition is met after, say 100ms which is simple waste of time.
Use WaitForExists (WaitForNotExists) to simulate Validate with Timeout forces to have unmaintainable number of items in the repository.
For those who code much there is a workaround: wrap Validate in a loop with timeout (or maybe create own Validation class).
But the workaround is not the solution.
If Validate can have Timeout property it would resolve…

    Thank you for your input.

Since we have improved the Ranorex runtime performance with Ranorex 9.2, we faced issues in our internal testing that also made it necessary to have some kind of “grace period” on validation actions. We are currently implementing a solution that should solve this issue.

  5. Upgrade Ranorex Studio to Support C# 7/.NET Standard/.NET Core

Currently Ranorex only supports up to C# 5.0 (per feedback from support) and does not seem to be able to install an NuGet packages that use .NET Standard or .NET Core. Using VIsual Studio 2017 or ReSharper for code editing usually causes issues as they use newer C# language features.

    Thank you for your input.

Currently, we are trying to change out our old code-gen tool for a new one. This would enable Ranorex to always support the newest C# versions. However, our code-gen is so deeply rooted into Ranorex Studio that this is more of a long-term project for us. We are working on it, but we won’t be there yet within the next few months.

  6. Add search boxes for parameters and variable binding

Foremost in big projects there are many parameters and variable bindings. Sometimes it is really messy to find the correct one. In addition, the parameters can not be sorted by name, which makes the search even more difficult. Maybe filters for unbound and bound might be cool too.

    Thank you for your input.

We are currently working on a UI overhaul for the data binding functionality. Many UI issues that we currently have there should be solved with this refurbishment.

  7. enable the video recording via code in Ranorex API

I would like to enable the video recording via code in Ranorex API.
This recording feature is really game changer and it is really shame that we cannot use it from Ranorex API. Ranorex API even define enums, but cannot be set Ranorex Documentation
    TestReport.VideoRecordingMode Enumeration
    Namespaces ► Ranorex.Core.Reporting ► TestReport ► TestReport.VideoRecordingMode

Workaround to use the command line argument within "Program.cs" dose not allowed to use it in .dll.

  8. Automatic creation of a Data Source using Variable Data

It would save so much time, effort and speed up the creation of automated scripts, if we didn't have to manually create a Data Source for a recording module, but instead Ranorex Studio could automatically create a selected Data Source (eg: simple, excel, SQL, etc), using the variable Name (as the column name) and Default Value (as the input value). See attached file for details.

    Thank you for your input.

This feature is actually already implemented and will be released with Ranorex 9.2.

If you join our Beta Program you can already try out this feature now, otherwise, you will have to wait until October.

  9. Note unbound values and bound (but at different level) values

Studio Feature: Currently there are notes (and warnings) if some variable is not bound to a value -

What i miss is having a note (not necessarily a warning) when values are not bound to a variable (e.g. because that SmartFolder was copied, and then some recordings were deleted, thereby no longer sourcing from those values).

(Additionally,) A feature to "see through" the different levels of SmartFolders and TestCases would be great, to see what/if a given value sources to in other levels. If this was implemented, it would automatically solve the above Feature Request, because if all levels are…

    Thank you for the input.

With Ranorex 9.2, we will release an overhauled data management experience, and your issues should be handled with the changes we have planned for this.

    The Ranorex Product Management Team

  10. Please add a function to create multiple variables collectively.

Please add a function to create new variables and to set their values at once.
This feature will reduce time and efforts to create variables.

    Thank you for the input.

With Ranorex 9.2 we will release a slightly overhauled Data Binding experience, and auto-generating variables will be among these changes.
